Author’s Note: I am glad to provide you with a copy of the Third Clarissa presentation from the Decade of Promise banquet at the 2001 General Assembly. Please read and/or use it only in the spirit in which it is intended - as a humorous, very much tongue-in-cheek look at the history and events which have brought us to this place in CBF life. Remember, it is impossible to laugh and be angry at the same time!

Our scripture for tonight is a passage from the sixth chapter of 3rd Clarissa. I shall be reading from the NASV or the New Abused Standard Version. This is a portion of the original autographs of scriptures found in the Dare She Scrolls. It was written to the post-exilic Baptists who survived the Southern Baptist Convention captivity.

Beginning with verse 3…

3. And it came to pass in the days of 1978 that there arose a generation of Baptists who knew not Smyth nor Helwys nor Broadus nor Truett. And so it was that these pseudo-Baptists decreed that all the Baptist world should be like unto them. (And this decree was first hatched over beignets in New Orleans.)

4. And their rulers took a big stick and wrote something in the dirt. And behold, they drew a line of rigidity and conformity. And all they who saw it were told to place their toes against this line.

5. And so it was that the seminaries were rife with tape recorders (thus was the beginning of tape ministries); and the classrooms were visited with a plague of rats who spoke against those who conformed not.

6. And the fundamentalists saith unto these: Thy fools; this day thy jobs shall be required of thee. And so it was that many were sacrificed on the altar of fundamentalism. From Baptist Press to the Baptist Joint Committee, they were brought unto the slaughter. And the blood of the jugulars ran deep.

7. And they saith unto the women, Why thinkest that thou are equal unto men? Woe are ye; for it is thou that hast introduced sin into the world in the Garden; and they became as naught in the eyes of the Baptist rulers; for they were only dross and chattle. And verily, verily I say unto you: they were commanded to graciously submit.

8. And so it was that the abomination and destruction continued from the east unto the west and from year unto year; and the laws of inerrancy and infallibility were hung like millstones around the necks of those who refused to compromise and behold they were cast into the outer darkness. And the tent of the SBC was made exceedingly narrow and it was zipped up.

9. And behold I say unto you that they of the new SBC were an stiff-necked people and became as decaffeinated Baptists.

10. And the moderates were pricked in their hearts and cried out with a loud voice against their oppressors. And behold, they sent many a gladiator into the arena of the presidential election at the SBC. Yea, from Houston to Kansas City to Dallas to Atlanta, their votes were numbered. And verily, verily all they who were sent were straightway devoured by the lions.

11. And the mouths of the donkeys were opened all over the convention. And they reviled and persecuted the moderates and called them liberals and spake all manner of blasphemies against them. And so it was that they smote the moderates with the jawbone of many an ass.

12. And it came to pass in the days of 1991, that the Southern Baptist Convention went unto the region of New Orleans.

13. And so it was that while they were there, they called unto them the final gladiator – a man named Daniel who was comely and who putteth on the whole armor of determination. His loins were girt about with integrity and he wore the breastplate of courage and had on the helmet of hope. And the moderates saith, "Behold, we have counted the votes, and this time, we shall surely be given the victory. But yea, they were yet weak and they knoweth not how to count.

14. And so it was that the man named Daniel was as a lamb to the slaughter and a sheep before his shearers. And when he emerged from the lions’ den that was New Orleans, he saith unto the faithful, Woe is me; for I am undone.

15. And it was then that many of the moderates saith, It is finished. And they gave up the ghost and departed from that city, shaking the dust of the Southern Baptist Convention from their feet.

16. And their countenance was cast down; for they were like as sheep with no shepherd; for they hath no place to lay their Baptist heads; and they cast in their minds what they should do.

And moving down to verse 23…

23. But the man named Daniel saith unto them: Come over to Atlanta and help us. And 3,000 souls assembled themselves together in one accord in one place called the Inforum. And a rushing mighty wind filled all the house; and behold it was the breath of freedom.

24. And the tongues of the people were loosed and all were permitted to speak. For no armed guard stood at the gates of the platform; and no Baptist pope cutteth off the microphones.

25. And one by one they spake – male and female, they all spake. And no man attempteth to say unto a woman, Sit and submit.

26. And behold they were all amazed and marveled as though they were full of new wine. But I tell you nay; for these were Baptists who drinketh not one in front of the other.

27. And the mighty rushing wind listeth over the dry bones of historic Baptist principles that had lanquished in fundamentalist darkess for many years. And behold, those principles that the Prophet Shurden has called the Four Fragile freedoms lived once again.

28. And the days were accomplished that in 1991, they gave birth to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship – and sweet was the travail thereof. And John the Baptist Hewett saith unto them: behold, thou art free and faithful Baptists.

29. And they brought unto them Sherman on the Mount who set his jaw toward Atlanta; and behold, this Cecil Augustus did lead them. And it was known throughout the land that Sherman had come to Atlanta again.

30. And the Fellowship grew and waxed strong. And yet verily, verily unto this day, they remain as a tiny flea upon the elephant of the SBC. But I say unto you that the SBC hath been greatly troubled by the presence of the flea. And CBF became like unto an holy splinter unto the SBC.

31. And what sayest thou is an holy splinter? Verily, verily I say unto you: an holy splinter is that which causeth much suffering and persuction in the hindmost regions until it be cast out.

32. And in the days of 1994, the SBC cried out with a loud voice that money that was passed through CBF was tainted; and it was seen as filthy lucre. And behold it was refused unto their coffers.

33. And it came to pass in 1996, that the prophet Daniel, being brought unto the kingdom for just such a time as this, didst come to lead them.

34. And those of the SBC descended from the Mount of the 2000 Southern Baptist Convention, bearing stone tablets upon which was written the words of "The new Baptist Waste and Vestige." And they continued to lay waste to that which had been authentically Baptist.

35. But the free and faithful Baptists doeth their own thing; and they girded up their loins and sent missionaries even unto the uttermost parts of World A. And behold they yoked themselves with new institutions of learning that their sons and yea even their daughters might rightly divide the Word of Truth so that they might go forth unto the communities around about and lead the people.

36. And within the Fellowship, Baptist distinctives flourished and waxed strong. And the people continued steadfastly in the work of helping Christians and churches.

37. And I say unto you that this day thou shalt lift up thy voices with songs of joy and a great shout of jubilation; give thanks for the pilgrims thou hast met on thy journey unto this place. Rejoice and be exceeding glad! For water hath broken forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert; for God hath created a new thing; And behold, it is very good.
